The Evolution of the Jean

Jean styles have had a really interesting evolution in what is in and what is out. However, several styles have made a comeback over the last couple of years. Wonder why? Ever wondered what decade the bell bottom originated? What about the mom jean? So, let’s take a little walk down memory lane!
Jean Styles in the 1950s
Firstly, the 1950s introduced the real appeal of the jean. These jeans were your traditional straight-legged jean. In other words, an absolute classic. It was most common to wear them with a classic white tee and hair down. Jeans were starting to become all the craze, and everyone everywhere wanted them!
The 1960s
Secondly, the 1960s jean was all about bell bottoms and patchwork. As shown in the picture, it was really popular around this time to feature women in modeling for jeans. The idea of “girl power” and feminism was also extremely popular during this time. Think about the poster featuring the woman saying, “We can do it!”
The 1970s
Thirdly, big hair and big jeans! This was THE time for fashion. Bell bottoms were the center of attention. The 70s were the age of glory. Advertisements flaunted what people wished that they could be. Popular brands, like Nike, were starting to make their appearance as well. The idea of living free and living wild encased the 70s.
Jean Styles in the 1980s
The 1980s piggybacked on the fashion of the 70s. The 80s introduced the more baggy jeans. These are now referred to as the “mom” and “dad” jean. Tucked in shirts, ponytails, and white sneakers made the whole outfit. This jean was much more high waisted than the others in past decades. As you can see, this jean has never gone out of style and is more popular than ever.
The 1990s and early 2000s
Finally, the 1990s and early 2000s centered around low-rise jeans and celebrity endorsements. If a celebrity wore it, everyone wanted it. People usually found someone they idolized and dressed just like them. Fashion icons like Brittany Spears, Madonna, and Paris Hilton were the epidemy of what people wanted to be. The last 2000s to the present is a huge mixture of all the decades. Many teens are seen flaunting the mom jean while middle-aged women prefer the skinny jean. This is a stark contrast to their childhood jeans. Also, it is not foreign to see many jeans with rips or holes in them. This is a big staple of the late 2000s – especially for teens and young adults.
The whole point is – jean styles have changed so much over the decades, but their impact is lasting. People appreciate a good jean, and jeans are part of a person. Why have they changed so much? Because people are always changing and so is their taste. The perfect jean is all about what suits you as a person. They are the perfect way to express personality and taste!
